The first word of a bullet does the heavy lifting. A precise, active verb tells the reader instantly what you did and how much you owned it.
Start every bullet with a verb
Begin with a past-tense action verb that captures your specific contribution — built, led, negotiated, reduced — and vary it across bullets so nothing reads as a template.
Do
- Use past tense for past roles and present tense for your current one, consistently.
- Pick the most precise verb available: "architected" and "shipped" say more than "worked on".
- Vary your openers so three bullets in a row don't all start with "Managed".
Avoid
- Avoid limp openers like "Responsible for", "Helped with", or "Worked on".
- Don't start with a noun or a date — the verb should come first.
