Strong bullets tell a small story: the challenge you faced, what you did about it, and what changed as a result. STAR is a simple way to keep that story complete.
Frame each bullet with STAR
STAR — Situation, Task, Action, Result — keeps a bullet from trailing off before it proves impact. You rarely need every element spelled out, but a clear action paired with a concrete result is the backbone of a great bullet.
Do
- Open with the action you personally took and close with the outcome it produced.
- Give just enough context (the situation or task) for the result to make sense.
- Make the reader feel the "so what" — why the work mattered.
Avoid
- Don't stop at what you were assigned; finish with what came of it.
- Don't bury the result at the end of a long, meandering sentence.
- Don't credit the team when the point is your individual contribution.

Use the X-Y-Z shorthand
A fast way to pressure-test a bullet: "Accomplished X, as measured by Y, by doing Z." If you can't name the Y, you're probably describing a duty rather than an achievement.

- Lead with the accomplishment (X).
- Anchor it to a number or observable outcome (Y).
- Name the method or approach that got you there (Z).
